bingeglot Privacy Policy

Effective

bingeglot is a browser extension that shows a video's subtitles in two languages, looks up words in offline dictionaries, and plays their pronunciation. This Privacy Policy explains what information the bingeglot extension and the bingeglot.com website (together, "bingeglot", "we", "us" or "our") handle, why we handle it, and the choices and rights you have. bingeglot is built to do its work on your device, so we receive very little information about you.

Summary of key points

  • What stays on your device. The subtitles you watch, the words you look up, your settings and your dictionaries are handled inside your browser and are not sent to us.
  • What reaches us. The languages whose dictionaries you download, the words you ask to hear with Listen, the technical details every web request carries, and anything you choose to email us.
  • What we never do. We do not sell your information, use it for advertising, build a profile of what you watch, or use it to train artificial intelligence models.
  • Who else is involved. Cloudflare hosts our servers and website. The streaming services and your browser's maker handle information under their own policies.
  • Your rights. You can ask to access, correct or delete information we hold about you, and removing the extension deletes everything it stored on your device.

1. Information processed on your device

In short: the subtitles you watch, the words you look up and your settings are handled inside your browser and are not sent to us.

On Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video and HBO Max, the extension reads the subtitles of the video you are playing, details of the video player such as its list of subtitle tracks and its playback position, and the page address, to tell whether a video is playing. It uses them to show subtitles in two languages, build the transcript and the speech timeline, look up words and replay lines. The extension does not run on any other website.

  • Subtitles. To show both subtitle lines, the extension downloads the video's subtitle files in your two languages directly from the streaming service. Those requests go to the streaming service, not to us.
  • Word lookups. Definitions come from dictionaries stored in your browser, so looking up a word does not send it anywhere.
  • Settings. Your languages, subtitle appearance, voice and on/off switches are saved in your browser's extension storage.
  • Dictionaries. The dictionaries you download, and for Korean a map of word roots, are saved in your browser's database so lookups work offline.

We do not receive any of this information. It stays on your device until you change it or remove the extension.

2. Information we collect

In short: only what it takes to deliver dictionaries and pronunciation, the technical details every web request carries, and anything you choose to send us.

Information the extension sends to our servers

  • Dictionary downloads. When you install the extension or choose new languages, it downloads their dictionaries from dict.bingeglot.com. The request shows which languages you chose.
  • Pronunciation. When you press Listen, the extension requests that word's recording from audio.bingeglot.com. The request contains the word, its language and accent, and the voice you chose. For Korean, the extension also downloads a map of word roots from the same server.

Technical information

Like any web request, requests to our servers and website carry technical information: your IP address, your browser type and version, your operating system, the time of the request and the file requested. Our hosting providers process this information to deliver files and protect against abuse. We do not use it to identify you, and we do not combine it with other information to build a profile of you.

Information you give us

If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you choose to write or attach, such as screenshots.

Information we do not collect

Apart from what you choose to email us, we do not collect your name, postal address, phone number, payment details, precise location or contacts. We do not collect the titles you watch, your viewing history, or your activity on any website the extension does not run on.

3. How we use information

In short: to run bingeglot's features, keep it secure, help you and meet our legal obligations. Never for advertising.

  • To provide the features you use, by delivering dictionaries and pronunciation recordings.
  • To keep bingeglot working and secure, by monitoring availability, diagnosing problems, and preventing abuse such as automated bulk downloading.
  • To respond to you, by answering questions, investigating problems you report and considering your feedback.
  • To improve bingeglot, using aggregate figures that do not identify anyone, such as how much our servers are used.
  • To meet legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Use.

We do not sell your information, use it for advertising or marketing profiles, make automated decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects, or use it to train artificial intelligence or machine learning models.

bingeglot's use of information received through Chrome's extension APIs complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We use that information only to provide and improve bingeglot's features, we do not transfer it except as this policy describes, and we do not allow people to read it unless the law requires it or it is needed to investigate abuse.

4. Legal bases for processing

In short: if you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we process your information only where the law gives us a basis to.

  • Performance of a contract: delivering the dictionaries and pronunciation you ask for, under our Terms of Use.
  • Legitimate interests: keeping bingeglot secure and available, preventing abuse, answering messages and understanding aggregate use, where those interests are not overridden by your rights.
  • Legal obligation: keeping or disclosing information where the law requires it.
  • Consent: where we ask for it. You can withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing that took place before.

5. How we share information

In short: only with the providers that run bingeglot for us, and where the law requires it.

  • Service providers. Cloudflare hosts bingeglot.com, hosts and delivers our dictionaries and recordings and protects our servers, and our email provider handles messages you send us. They process information on our behalf, under terms that limit its use to providing their services.
  • Legal requirements and protection. We may disclose information if the law, a court order or a government request requires it, or where we believe it is needed to protect the rights, property or safety of bingeglot, our users or others.
  • Business transfers. If bingeglot is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, and this policy will continue to apply to it.
  • With your consent, for any other purpose you agree to.

We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

6. Third-party services

In short: bingeglot works inside services run by other companies, whose own privacy policies apply to them.

  • Streaming services. The extension runs on the pages of Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video and HBO Max. Your use of those services, including the subtitle files the extension downloads from them, is governed by their privacy policies. We do not receive information about you from them.
  • Your browser's speech voices. When no recording exists for a word, the extension uses the speech voices available in your browser. Some of them, such as Chrome's Google voices, are provided over the network by your browser's maker, which then receives the word under its own privacy policy.
  • Chrome Web Store. Google runs the Chrome Web Store and handles your installation under its own privacy policy. It may give us aggregate statistics, such as the number of installations, that do not identify you.
  • Links. Our website links to other sites, such as the sources of our dictionaries. Their privacy practices are their own.

We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these companies, and we encourage you to read their policies.

7. Cookies and similar technologies

In short: no cookies and no tracking.

  • Website. bingeglot.com does not use cookies, analytics, advertising or tracking pixels. If you choose a light or dark appearance, your browser remembers that choice in its local storage, and it never leaves your device.
  • Extension. The extension keeps your settings and dictionaries in your browser, as section 1 describes. Its requests to our servers send no cookies.
  • Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. We do not track you across websites, sell personal information or share it for advertising, so there is nothing for these signals to switch off. We treat a Global Privacy Control signal as a valid request to opt out of sale and sharing.

8. How long we keep information

In short: no longer than we need it.

  • On your device: your settings and dictionaries stay until you change them or remove the extension, which deletes them.
  • Requests to our servers: we do not keep records that link the languages you download or the words you hear to you. Our providers keep technical request data for the limited periods their own policies set.
  • Emails: we keep correspondence as long as we need it to help you and to keep a record of our conversation, generally no longer than two years after our last exchange, unless you ask us to delete it sooner or the law requires us to keep it longer.

When we no longer need information, we delete it or make it anonymous.

9. How we protect information

In short: we hold very little, and we protect what we hold.

  • Every request to our servers uses encrypted HTTPS connections.
  • The extension checks each dictionary against its published checksum before installing it.
  • The extension asks for access only to the supported streaming sites, Netflix's subtitle servers and our own two servers, and it runs no code loaded from the internet.

No method of transmitting or storing information is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your device and browser secure.

10. Your privacy rights

In short: you can ask what we hold about you, and have it corrected or deleted.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • access the personal information we hold about you and receive a copy;
  • correct information that is inaccurate;
  • have your information deleted;
  • restrict or object to how we process it;
  • receive it in a portable format;
  • withdraw consent where we rely on it; and
  • complain to your local data protection authority, if you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland.

Because the extension keeps your subtitles, lookups, settings and dictionaries on your device, you control that information directly: removing the extension deletes it. To exercise any right, email andrew@co.dev or use our contact page. We may need to confirm your request comes from you, and we will respond within 30 days, or sooner where the law requires. We will not treat you differently for exercising your rights.

11. Additional rights for United States residents

In short: we do not sell or share personal information, and you have the rights your state's law gives you.

If you live in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia or another state with a comprehensive privacy law, you may have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use and disclose it, to access, correct and delete it, and to opt out of its sale, its sharing for targeted advertising, and profiling. In the past 12 months we have collected these categories of personal information:

You may make a request yourself or through an authorized agent with your written permission. If we decline a request, you may appeal by replying to our decision. If your appeal is denied, you may contact your state's Attorney General.

12. International transfers

In short: our providers may process information outside your country.

Our providers operate in the United States and other countries, whose data protection laws may differ from yours. When information moves from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland to a country without an adequacy decision, we rely on safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses in our providers' data processing terms.

13. Children's privacy

In short: bingeglot is not directed to children.

bingeglot is not directed to children under 13, or under the higher age that local law sets for consent. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

14. Changes to this policy

In short: we will update this page and tell you about important changes.

We may update this policy as bingeglot or the law changes. The effective date at the top shows when it last changed. For material changes, we will give more prominent notice, such as on our website or in the extension's Chrome Web Store listing. Continuing to use bingeglot after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy, to the extent the law allows.

15. Contact us

In short: email andrew@co.dev.

If you have questions or comments about this policy, want to exercise your rights, or have a concern about how we handle information, email andrew@co.dev or visit our contact page. bingeglot is the controller of the personal information this policy describes.
